Local Regulations

Massage therapy is regulated within the District of Columbia by the DC Department of Health.  A current license is required to practice massage therapy in the District.

Requirements for licensure include the completion of a 500 hour professional training program, passing a written national certification exam, current CPR and first aid certifications, and a criminal background check.

Massage licenses are renewed every two years.  LMTs must complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education during each two year cycle.

Individuals practicing massage therapy without a current license should be reported to the DC Board of Massage Therapy at (877) 672-2174.
